Space

Space, the final frontier.

Yeah, ok. It's a cheesy start. But it really is true. Not in the sense you're thinking of. I mean, yeah, space is a final frontier, but you know, we've only explored 20% of the ocean. And whoever originally wrote that obviously never had a teenager with her own room. (I know there's carpet in there somewhere. Wait, just how many hoodies do you have? And look, spoons!)

But exploring space isn't really about heading out to the stars (at least that's not what I want to talk about).

The old saying goes "you make time for what's important to you" and there's a level of truth to that. But really, we make time for what we have to make time for. (Keep in mind that according to Einstein, time and space are the same thing.) Even as I'm writing this, I realize I have to go out and pick up my daughter from school (and then have her take those spoons, and most of the rest of our dishes and silverware, down to the kitchen). And yes, my daughter is important to me, but so is writing this. And so is looking for a job. And so is cleaning the kitchen. And so is playing my guitar. And so is… Fill in the blank.

We (I) need to make space. I have worked from home for the past seven years and my desk is rather chaotic (a reflection, I'm sure, of the state of my mind most days). I have no space for much. But last week, I had a traffic court date and I couldn't remember where it was, but I knew the notice was on my desk. Somewhere. So I made space and found the notice (and I made it to court and got the violation dismissed!). Then my daughter came up and asked me to sign some paperwork for school, so I made space. Most days, my schedule is kind of the same as my desk. I've got a lot going on. So I have to make space.

Many times, the space is in the nooks and cracks around everything else. I'm back from picking up my daughter, but now I have to leave in 30 minutes to take her to dance (thank God she's getting her license in a few months). So I have a crack  in my schedule of 30 minutes. What do I put in that space? Writing this. But also, that email to the recruiter. And maybe a bite of lunch too. You see, we can explore space and fit what we need. I'll have another crack in my schedule later. Maybe a bit of guitar practice will look nice there.

We'll see.

I still need to find those spoons.
