Planting

I don’t know a whole lot about gardening and plants and such.  Neither does my wife.  We were recently at Trader Joe’s and she decided to buy another plant.  As we got to the checkout, my daughter mentioned to the checker that mom was going to kill another plant.  My wife said it’s okay, my husband prayed for it.  I told her, “Honey, I didn’t pray for it.  I was giving it last rites.”  My wife was not amused.

As I said, I don’t know a whole lot about farming, and gardening and such.  No, but what I do know about planting comes from elementary school.  You know, you get a little cup of dirt, you dig a hole (maybe fling some dirt at that girl you secretly like), put in the seed, and then you cover it up.  And this is key.  This is what I want to talk about.

If you don’t cover the seed, there’s no plant.  There’s no way for the seed to get the nutrition that it needs, it dries out, doesn’t get the moisture it needs, it’s not protected, it can be picked up by any old bird flying by.

Now God has planted a seed in you, and it’s going to be a tremendous plant. But you feel like it’s been covered up.  You haven’t seen much of it in a while. It’s become hidden.  But that’s ok! God dug the hole, put the seed in, then HE covered it up.  Covering the seed protects it.  Nourishes it.  It will sprout.  Have you been experiencing some rain in your life lately?  Seems a little stormy?  Maybe you feel you’ve had some, let’s say fertilizer, dumped on you? This is all God getting the seed what it needs to grow.

God hasn’t forgotten about the seed. Don’t you forget either!  Just because you can’t see that seed anymore, doesn’t mean it’s dead.

God’s timing is perfect and He will bring forth the plant in His time and it will be beautiful.  It will be powerful.  It will break through the concrete we’ve paved over it.

Nothing in heaven or hell, or anything in this world can stop the blooming of what God as for you.  Your seed is still there and God is bringing it forth.

Many years ago, God put a scripture on my heart: Ezekiel 12:22-23, 26-28:

“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by and every vision comes to nothing’?  Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer quote it in Israel.’ Say to them, ‘The days are near when every vision will be fulfilled.”The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, the Israelites are saying, ‘The vision he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies about the distant future.’“Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

In context, Ezekiel is talking about the prophesied judgement against Israel, but for me, it is the fulfillment of prophetic words spoken over me that I had grown tired of waiting for.  And this is what God is speaking to you.  You feel like the seed has been planted so long, you’ve given up on ever seeing a plant.  But God is saying “Hang on! The time is coming when you will see your plant.”

And when that time comes, and the plant springs forth, don’t worry.  God is much better at tending plants than my wife or I am.

They will be called oaks of righteousness,A planting of the Lordfor the display of His splendor       —Isaiah 61:3
